Quickride is back with more JDM Obscure goodness! And today i'm introducing you with one of the newer JDM forbidden fruit that somehow ends up in my country: Toyota Mark X.
The Mark X was a 4-door mid-size sedan. It's designed for people who wants a Camry, but they wants some fun like doing sideways or massive burnouts, so instead of Front-Wheel Drive they give the Mark X Rear-Wheel Drive or Optional 4WD. Yeeees.
Plus, they give it more power. They have the "Sports" version with 314hp Naturally-Aspirated 3.5L V6. Or the 350hp Modellista model, with 3.5L Supercharged V6. Too bad mine was the base model 250G with 2.5L V6, so it only has 204 hp. At least it's RWD tough.
Inside, it was quite well-equipped. Plus because it was the "Premium" Trim, so you got stuff like chrome bits inside the car to blind you to make the innards looks more expensive and refined.
Driving wise, because the car only has 204hp, plus i haven't got a chance to drive it like a maniac, it feels like a camry. The 6-speed Auto is better than the one in camry somehow, but that's about it. I don't know about the "Sports" or the "Modellista" one tough, that would be interesting to drive, because moar powar.
At this point you might think "Hey aya, that's very interesting. how much it is?"
Well, Toyota Mark X starts from 49k here in Indonesia for the base model. Add premium trim like this very car and you'll end up paying 55k for it. For moar powar you'll need moar monies, so you'll spend 59k for the "Sports" one. And looking at 65k for the "Modellista" one.
For a comparison, Camry Hybrid cost 65k here in Indonesia. Odyssey cost 70k, BMW 320i cost 75k, and Miata cost 59k, so Mark X is not a bad deal. But people is buying camry anyways, which is a good thing. I mean, the local Toyota dealer in my town haven't sold enough Mark X to justify the cost of making it, so they put a massive discount on this model. So, if you bought a Mark X here in Indonesia, you got a Free Car!
Really, you got a free Toyota Avanza/Yaris if you bought a Mark X. Toyota Avanza is a 7-seater very basic family minivan which cost 15k or so. The Toyota Yaris is a hatchback you all know and maybe love. Why they do that? because there's a new version of Mark X coming up like that later this year and they want to get rid the old car.
So there's that. 55k for an RWD Camry which need moar powar but comes with a free car. NP?
*For me it's CP tough. But the Sports is might be an NP if i can get some discount on it and get that thing for 50k. Or maybe get the new X because that looks brilliant. Just look at this pic:

For a Sport with a free Avanza to come with(I hate the Yaris) is for less than a Miata? Nice Price All the Way. I understand 60K is a lot of money. but you have to remember you are in a different market where all the cars are ridiculously expensive. The Mark X looks about the same class of car we get here as the Lexus IS250/IS350.
so if you think it's about the same as getting a Lexus IS350 and a free Toyota Corolla for 40K usd in America. Which in my mind that's a KILLER deal.

Yes, the sport is so nice price.
Plus nobody will think you have 314hp on your disposal with a car that looks like that. Plus you can always sell the Avanza/Yaris since you got a much better car to live with.
But the standard/premium trim is a bit too much, since they priced too close with the Sport/Modellista.

It's sort of amazing to me how the name of this car coincides with two Jaguars:
Mark X
420G
Also, the idea of a R/AWD Camry intrigues me. And that last Mark X photo with the rounded fender lines and aggressive nose actually looks cool. I'm really confused now. Why isn't this car a Lexus?

You're right I did not even think of selling the free car as I would give it to my wife. but if you sell the spare car then you are getting a Brand New Sport Mark X for 45-50K.
which equals to a new Lexus IS350 for 25-30K in America. Again I have to say Steal of a deal.

That's true. The current price puts it in a different bracket than if were lower. Then it would be really competitive.

Well, i think that because the Japanese didn't get the lexus. So to satisfy the need of lexus they build Mark X and the Crown plus all the trims (Comfort, Royal Saloon, Athlete, and Majesta), and the Aristo and the Century.
The last photo is the brand new Mark X that the Japanese get since 2014 model year but haven't sold in Indonesia yet. Too bad those all mark X is auto only..
And those Jags are really cool.

Yeah. i might getting one if this were about 5k lower, but because it was so close, i see no reason to up my budget a little bit and get 110hp extra.
Really, you will feel the 110hp difference because it's a lot.

Well, are you sure you want your wife to tool around in a cheap ass mpv with no airbags, no radio, and 91hp 1.3L i4 engine that looks like this?
But yeah, it's one hell of a deal. Plus i think it has moar powaaaar than the IS if you get the Modellista, plus it's lighter. So i think i'll try the Modellista and see if i can afford it.

Well, toyota of USA is weird.
I still don't understand why they even need the Scion. Let alone the Mark X sold in the USA. I think the only possible explanation is, they don't want to ruin the Lexus IS market with a smaller, lighter, and more powerful sedan.
This car with modellista trim has 350hp. While the IS350 only has 314hp, same as Mark X Sport. So yeah, there's that.

I see..
I think i'm the only one that don't understand the appeal of this thing. I think Yaris is the better car to get, but Avanza is more expensive somehow, and hold their value amazingly good.
Used avanza normally wents for 13-14k, and that's already 3 years old. South east asians just loves these things.

RWD manual wagon/minivan > FWD compact. IMO they are both bad but given the choice I would take the Avanza over the Yaris
Get the Avanza in brown and you're set.

hahaha :D
Yeah, those two is bad cars. I just found out that this thing is actually an RWD. So strap a couple turbos in it, remove the seats, and you have an auto-x killer!
*Well, not really.
